Sure, they see the world, hang out with the pretty people, and have a wardrobe full of designer clothes, but the simple things—like birthday parties—are often the hardest to obtain for the modern supermodel. Such was the case on Monday night, when Irina Lazareanu was notably absent from the joint celebration of another year of both her life and that of Hedi Ferjani, a.k.a. designer Erin Fetherston’s better half. “I spoke to her Sunday night and she was really hoping she could make it,” Ferjani said of Lazareanu, who had been planning on flying back from San Francisco for the fête. Asked if he didn’t mind that all the attention was then on him, he blushed. “Sure. It’s the first time I’ve celebrated my birthday in ten years.” Those helping ring in another year of Ferjani—and of Lazareanu, even if she wasn’t there—included Gilles Mendel, Dr. Lisa Airan, Olivier Zahm, Lou Doillon, Jamie Burke, Zani Gugelmann, and Elise Øverland. But don’t feel too bad for the model—we hear that she’s officially back in New York today and hoping to actually attend her next party.—Derek Blasberg

Glamorous fantasy reigned at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering spring ball last night. “My daughter saw me and said, ‘Mommy, you look so beautiful. You look like a princess,’ ” said Muffie Potter Aston, the event chair. “I said, ‘Remember that story of Cinderella?’ She said yes. I said, ‘At midnight, these jewels disappear.’ ” She wore a necklace by Bulgari, the evening’s corporate sponsor, of cabochon rubies, sapphires, and emeralds with diamonds. Elsewhere, chat centered on what else but “SATC.” “I loved the ‘Sex and the City’ movie. It was really real. In the Vogue magazine shoot, there was André [Leon Talley] and there was Plum [Sykes]. They really strove for authenticity,” said Andrew Saffir. Tory Burch countered that the fashion industry “has never been depicted in the right way. It’d be interesting to take ‘24,’ and look at it from a fashion standpoint.” But who would play Jack?—Blythe Sheldon

Although many guests at Erin Fetherson’s Resort presentation at the Van Cleef & Arpels store on Fifth Avenue last night were still scratching their heads over Calvin Klein’s abrupt eleventh-hour cancellation of its fragrance launch, which had also been scheduled for yesterday evening, Fetherston herself didn’t seem to mind. “It’s good news for me,” she joked. “Now people will hang around and have a drink.” The collection of muted frocks was set up to look like Cecil Beaton images of debutantes. Said the designer, “It kind of reminds me of what I might want to wear on a giant plantation in the Bahamas.” Down at the Earnest Sewn shop in the Meatpacking District, the vibe was less, shall we say, formal. First there were the drinks (vodka mixed with Red Bull doesn’t do a thing for depth perception); second, it was wall-to-wall hipsters; and third, the holes between the oversize planks that make up the floor don’t exactly mix well with high heels. This last fact almost proved a doozy for the night’s hostess, actress Isabelle McNally, the daughter of restaurateur Keith McNally. “That was a little embarrassing,” she said after a stumble, adding that she had intentionally worn wedges for this very reason. Not that she minded, since many of the witnesses were her friends. “I feel like it’s my bat mitzvah,” she laughed.—Derek Blasberg

When Jerry Hall decides to do some spring cleaning, you can bet the cast-offs will make one seriously glamorous pile. But the statuesque model is as philanthropic as she is stylish, so instead of dispatching her old frocks to the junk heap, she’s selling them at auction to benefit Emmaus, a U.K. charity that aids the homeless. The auction, called “Passion for Fashion and Fine Textiles,” will be conducted tomorrow, June 10, by Kerry Taylor Auctions at Sotheby’s in London, and will include some of Hall’s most famous frocks, like the Antony Price dress she wore to wed Mick Jagger in 1990, the Mr. Pearl gusseted corset featured on the auction’s catalog cover, and frocks from Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel, Bill Blass, and more. Jerry’s haul is expected to raise at least £25,000 (about $49,300) for Emmaus. Also hitting the block alongside the model’s wardrobe are breathtaking gowns from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, antique linens and fabrics, and works of art from Egon Schiele and Henry Moore. For more information, see www.kerrytaylorauctions.com.—Kat Thomsen

Judging by the fashion at last night’s Ferragamo-sponsored New York City Ballet “Dance With the Dancers” benefit at Lincoln Center, costume parties shouldn’t be relegated to Halloween. Nor should the evening’s theme, “When in Rome,” immediately conjure visions of gladiators and chariots. “When I think of Rome, I think of Valentino, Sophia Loren,” Dennis Basso explained. “The Roman influence never goes away. On the right woman, it could be smashing.” Case in point: event chairwoman Allison Sarofim, who donned a one-shouldered, white Lanvin dress. “I love this party because people are extremely creative,” she enthused. “They either do a full-on costume—which I always love—or they do a more fashion-y version of it.” The evening’s highlight, a performance from the NYCB dancers, evoked some nostalgia from Sarofim, a one-time ballerina herself. “I think that’s why I’m so involved in the ballet now,” she said of her short-lived dance career. “I didn’t get very far!”—Sarah Fones

Los Angeles-based jewelry designer Gabriela Artigas has come a long way since her 2003 debut, when she crafted an entire collection from—wait for it—toothbrushes. Her fans now include Björk, Cameron Diaz, and Salma Hayek, and there are waiting lists for her custom-order creations, which are available exclusively at Des Kohan. Artigas’ latest pieces came about thanks to her surprise discovery of a trove of vintage gold-plated bows made by a former accessory manufacturer for Chanel, which she came across while vacationing in Arizona last year. Accordingly, her 30-piece collection this season features bow-bedecked headbands, necklaces, and bracelets, all of which are teamed with chains crafted from oxidized sterling silver, copper, and 14-karat gold.—Linlee Allen

Well, she made it. Throughout Thursday night’s dinner to celebrate the opening of the Center for Contemporary Culture in Moscow, guests debated whether the legendarily late and loose Amy Winehouse had made her flight from London and would be up to singing a few ditties. Dasha Zhukova, the Russian entrepreneur and current flame of wealthy businessman Roman Abramovich (he reportedly picked up Winehouse’s alleged $2 million invoice), had confirmed all with the beehived crooner the day before. Still, the majority consensus was: “We’ll believe it when we see it.” Believe it, though. She was there and she was good. The Grammy winner, who’s been playing to an audience of policemen and an incarcerated husband lately, took the stage in a printed cocktail dress—which spent the the evening being yanked to mid-thigh in Winehouse’s trademark shimmy—and high heels (no bloody ballet flats here!). She even sang an encore for the international A-list crowd (a Gagosian here, a Santo Domingo there). “She is terrific, truly,” said Eugenie Niarchos, who sat front-row during the intimate concert, just next to the singer’s water bottles. “Totally lucid, too.”—Derek Blasberg

You can always measure the success of a store opening by: 1. guests drinking the Veuve Clicquot bar dry, and 2. the attendance of local designers doing their bit to congratulate you on a retail spot in the same city as your old stomping ground. Such was the case in Los Angeles last night at the 3.1 Phillip Lim opening on Robertson Boulevard, as the likes of Magda Berliner, Jesse Kamm, and Jasmin Shokrian showed their support for the SoCal native along with Emmy Rossum, who was in the mood for a little Thursday evening retail therapy. "Is the register open tonight? I brought my credit card especially," she cooed. And she wasn’t the only one, as guests within the 5,000-square-foot store (Lim’s third to date and said to be four years in the making) shopped up a storm among a myriad of rooms separated by pyramid foam walls, bamboo-lined shelves, lacquered concrete floors, and circular skylights. Next door’s tanning salon never had it this good.

With Italy squaring off against Spain in the quarter finals of Euro 2008, soccer fever has been seeping into the menswear venues in Milan. At her show on Sunday, the last before kickoff time, Miuccia Prada acknowledged that fashion wasn’t the night’s only agenda. "And now to the football," she said as she greeted guests backstage. Alas for Prada and her fellow countrymen, the Italian team would lose on penalties.

Mary-Kate Olsen doesn’t let a little long-distance commuting interfere with her work-life balance. In between taping a guest appearance on “Samantha Who?” in Los Angeles on Tuesday and walking the red carpet in New York for her new film “The Wackness” on Wednesday, she managed to fit in a little R & R. Wednesday evening saw her squeeze in the Pearl Jam concert at Madison Square Garden and hit up the after-party on the roof of the Gramercy Hotel. This morning she dropped by David Letterman (the show airs tonight), then headed to the airport to go back to L.A. and more work on “Samantha Who?” “It’s been a busy week, for sure,” she said.—Derek Blasberg
