Fashion’s Night Out: A Call To Action

Calling all retailers: The last day to register to participate in Fashion’s Night Out is August 1. As we’ve previously reported, on September 10, stores across New York’s five boroughs and around the world will be staying open late, and many of them will be hosting special events to reel in the customers. And by “special” we don’t mean ho-hum wine and cheese. We mean the kind of irresistible “special” that will incite a fashion lover who’s temporarily hung up her Fifth Avenue spurs to hitch up the saddle and high-tail it into stores. What will she see? Alexander Wang will be instructing shoppers on the art of runway modeling at Barneys’ Madison Avenue outpost before hightailing it over to Bergdorf’s on Fifth to sign T-shirts. Meanwhile, down the block at Saks, both Donna Karan and Carolina Herrera will be fêting their new in-store boutiques with assists from beauty gurus Bobbi Brown and Frédéric Fekkai. And that’s just the beginning of the fun to be had; so far, more than 300 stores in the city have registered to participate. Pint-Size Perfection, Eau De Wang, And More…

The Olsens may be rich, but their production office for The Row is kind of janky: “The furniture is nicked, the windows mossy with grime, and the five employees who share the two-room office have to step around a stack of fabric bolts.” Never fear. The clothes are “perfect,” according to Bergdorf Goodman’s Jim Gold and Barneys’ Julie Gilhart. Well, they should know. [NYT]

Is Alexander Wang a magnet for supes? The likes of Trish Goff, Tasha Tilberg, and Natasa Vojnovic stepped out for his Fall ‘09 show, and we hear that the designer has nabbed Frankie Rayder for his Spring ‘10 performance this Saturday. With the exception of appearances at Michael Kors last season and Givenchy a year ago, the Wisconsin beauty and better half to Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers has been mostly retired from the runway scene. We can’t help but wonder if lil’ sis Missy is behind this one—she starred in Wang’s Spring lookbook, after all.—Romney Leader

Alexander Wang Has A Moment Of Clarity

Just as we were digesting the see-through accessories on the Prada Spring 2010 runway, a photo of this bag from Alexander Wang crossed the Style.com transom. Boy wonder Wang has reinterpreted his sold-out—and we do mean sold-out—mini-duffel from Fall in a semi-see-through version for Spring 2010. We’re told that the bags will be “coming soon” on the Alexander Wang Web site. Fall’s mini-duffel in black leather and gold studs has received the implicit endorsement of at least one Olsen twin. Presuming MK signs on for the Spring edition, does that mean we get to see what she has in her bag?—Maya Singer

Cintra Wilson reviews Isaac Mizrahi’s new shop (remember, he’s not calling it a store) and ends up reviewing Isaac himself. He’s the “Falstaff of the fashion world,” she writes, which, we think, is a sneaky way of saying he’s lovably loud. [NYT]

Turns out there was no truth to the rumor circulating earlier this week that Rome would replace Milan as the seat of Italy’s fashion shows. In fact, it’s “nonsense!” But Rome may reprise its own fashion show—Donna Sotto Le Stelle (”Woman Under the Stars”)—where a bunch of models would “[teeter] down the Spanish Steps.” Ooh, sounds so fun and dangerous! What with the threesome going on behind him, you may have missed Karl Lagerfeld’s jacket Monday night for his bow after the Chanel show. Apparently it was from Calvin Klein. Does this make Italo Zucchelli the new Hedi Slimane? [WWD]

Alexander Wang’s Got “It” In The Bag

Alexander Wang hit Barneys’ Madison Avenue flagship yesterday for a trunk show to debut his Spring 2010 line. No surprise, the girls (and grandmas!) were waiting. Below, Wang’s report, exclusively for Style.com.

When I got to Barneys, I was welcomed with the news that our Rocco bag had a waiting list of 400-plus. By day’s end, their entire Spring 2010 handbag order sold out with pre-buys—and that’s before it will even hit the floor. Yikes! Good news, but now we’re going to have to figure out how to produce more bags so our section won’t be empty come January.

Having the chance to meet and personally walk through the collection with customers is a truly fulfilling experience. It’s amazing to hear firsthand how much they enjoy wearing the collection and to see the range of buyers. Girls come in with their mothers and even grandmothers, and I love that they all can find something within the collection.

Next stop is Chicago for another Barneys trunk show, and then to Zurich for the Swiss Textile Awards, which I’m totally psyched for. I’ve got a ton of stuff to keep me busy, but at least I’ll have Halloween to party before the next round!—Alexander Wang

Exclusive: Rodarte, Tavi, And Target Team Up On Video

Teenage blogging sensation Tavi Gevinson made the scene during New York fashion week back in September, hitting the hottest shows (Alexander Wang) and the most happening fêtes (Larry Gagosian’s townhouse party). But as far as we know, only Rodarte’s Kate and Laura Mulleavy put the 13-year-old to work. The results of their collaboration, a video project promoting the designers’ Target collection that took them from the Gagosian Gallery (where Elijah Wood tells Tavi, “You sort of have a Mia Farrow thing going on”) to the North Dakota prairies, is premiering exclusively online here at Style.com. Before you hit Target on December 20 to shop the collection (FYI: Tavi’s faves are a lace cardi in a “sixties mustard color” and a Bonnie and Clyde-inspired “kind of mohair-ish” vest), read our Q&A and watch this clip.

What attracts you to Tavi and why did you want her to be a part of this video?

Kate and Laura: She is a mix between J.D. Salinger, Dorothy Parker, and Cindy Sherman. Our favorite combination!

What was it like meeting the Mulleavy sisters for the first time?

Tavi: I was nervous because I had been a great admirer of Rodarte for a long time. But they were really relaxed and down-to-earth and had so many interesting things to say. I remember when we went to the Olvera Street market I picked up a pack of Mexican bingo cards and they couldn’t believe I didn’t already own any.

Is Tavi the person different from her online persona? If so, how?

Kate: When spending time with Tavi, I am always astonished by her observations. Tavi is a writer in every sense. Her way of interacting with the world comes from a sensitivity and madness that belongs to poets and bank robbers.

What was the collaboration process on this video like? And what did you learn from it?

Tavi: I wasn’t quite sure what to expect and I think you can tell—or it’s very noticeable to me, at least—how in the videos I first shot my voice is slightly shaky. But again, Kate and Laura are very relaxed and really wanted to make it fun, and it was. I took away from it more of an idea of what goes on at a photo shoot or editors’ preview—not just the process but the thoughts behind it and how people with different styles or visions can collaborate or enjoy the same things. It was interesting to see how editors with such individual tastes could interpret the pieces differently but still all enjoy them.

I also never realized how important attention to detail is, but Laura and Kate and Autumn [de Wilde] and everyone made sure they were confident in every decision concerning the shoots. That’s when you know people are really passionate about something.

Any funny anecdotes about the collaboration?

Kate: Tavi’s mother sang us all a Norwegian lullaby one night on the way to visit an old Czech church that was kept open for us to see under the stars while we were in North Dakota.

What was it like working on the collection for Target?

Kate: Working on the Target line allowed Laura and me to stretch the breadth of our work, while, at the same time, staying true to our aesthetic sensibility.

If you could have every piece of the Rodarte for Target collection or just one piece from Rodarte’s Spring 2010 collection, which would you choose?

Tavi: This is hard…but proooobably Spring 2010 because I can afford the Target line! I think I would pick look 19…It combines many of my favorite visual components of the collection and the burnt fabrics are so delicate-looking. I just want you to know I spent a long time laboring over this decision and had to write down a lot of stuff to figure it out. Never ask me such a question again.

Any predictions on which Rodarte for Target piece will be the most wanted by shoppers?

Tavi: I’m thinking one of the ballerina slip-shoulder bow dresses. The silhouette is like a Rodarte staple and I love the idea of clouding a slip with tulle. Either that or the leopard-print dress. It’s painted lace, has three bows on the back, and has such character to it.

What would you like to see Rodarte do next?

Tavi: It would be really cool if they started their own planet or something, but realistically speaking, a book club or Mexican bingo night would be cool, too. Really though, I just want them to continue to be inspired because so far only good things have come out of that.—Nicole Phelps

We didn’t include Frankie Rayder in our roundup of the best party dresses of 2009 because, well, she wasn’t wearing a party dress. But we couldn’t let the year close without giving Ms. Rayder her due: This was one of our favorite looks this year. At Alexander Wang and Love’s famous gas-station party this September, the model combined (at least!) three trends in one: the Wang-approved sweats, the military flak jacket, and the still-all-important quilted bag.

How Do You Take Your Trench?

With the holidays upon us, you’re probably looking forward to wrapping up in a cashmere blanket and settling down for a long winter’s nap. Don’t get too comfy. The Spring collections will be arriving in stores a few weeks after New Year’s, and the season’s must-have coats will go fast. In 2010, you’re going to want a trench.… OK, we know what you’re thinking: Every season, it seems, publications like ours are proclaiming, “The trench is back.” But this time, we’re not talking about the classic version. The utilitarian topper has been tweaked: At Aquascutum, Michael Herz added feminine ruffles. Alexander Wang sliced the sleeves off. Nina Ricci’s Peter Copping went long, and the designers at Christian Dior, Comme des Garçons, and Hermès chopped their versions at the waist.
